Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has commissioned a 72.5-megawatt (MW) captive solar power project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, India.
The company said the project was developed for Tata Steel Limited as part of efforts to expand renewable energy supply for industrial operations.
The solar plant features 171,360 modules manufactured by TP Solar Limited and is expected to generate approximately 166 million units (MUs) of clean electricity annually.
TPREL said the project will also help avoid an estimated 118,856 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, contributing to the company’s broader decarbonisation and clean-energy objectives.
With the commissioning of the Bikaner project, TPREL’s total renewable utility-scale capacity has increased to 12.3 gigawatts (GW). About 7 GW of this capacity is currently operational, comprising approximately 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind power.
The company has a further 5.3 GW of renewable energy capacity under various stages of development, including 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind projects. These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next six to 24 months.
TPREL provides renewable energy solutions to a broad range of industries, including data centres, telecommunications, information technology, petrochemicals, steel, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods and biotechnology.
The latest project adds to TPREL’s growing portfolio of solar installations in Bikaner. The company previously commissioned a 450 MWp DC/300 MW AC domestically manufactured solar project for NHPC Limited at Karnisar Bhatiyan in the region.
Its subsidiary, TP Saurya Limited, has also commissioned a 200 MW solar project in Bikaner for Tata Power Trading Company Limited.
In March 2024, TPREL commissioned the Banipura Solar Power Project in Bikaner, with a total capacity of 300 MW AC and 411 MW DC. The facility supplies power to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited’s Bikaner 2 station and was developed to meet the electricity requirements of Bikaner city.
The Banipura facility comprises two units of 100 MW AC/134 MW DC and 200 MW AC/277 MW DC and uses bifacial glass-to-glass solar modules designed to improve efficiency and maximise power generation.
The commissioning of the latest 72.5 MW captive project further strengthens Bikaner’s position as an important hub for large-scale solar development while expanding Tata Power’s renewable energy portfolio.
