A major solar-plus-battery storage project at the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially commenced commercial operations, marking a significant development in the use of renewable energy to support large-scale mining activities.
The facility combines 233 megawatts-peak (MWp) of solar photovoltaic capacity with 526 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage, creating a system capable of supplying approximately 30 megawatts of firm power to the copper mining operation.
Unlike conventional solar power systems, which generate electricity primarily during daylight hours, the integration of battery storage allows excess solar energy to be stored and dispatched when required. This means the mining complex can have access to a more consistent power supply even when solar generation falls because of cloud cover, nighttime conditions or other fluctuations.
The project is being described as Africa’s first solar-plus-battery energy storage system (BESS) specifically designed to provide firm baseload power, highlighting the growing role of energy storage in supporting reliable renewable electricity across the continent.
For the Kamoa-Kakula mining operation, the project represents an effort to diversify its power supply while incorporating more renewable energy into its operations. The combination of solar generation and large-scale battery storage is expected to improve the reliability and availability of electricity supplied to the complex.
The development also demonstrates how battery energy storage can address one of the major challenges associated with renewable energy — intermittency. By storing electricity generated when solar resources are abundant and making it available when demand arises, battery systems can help transform variable renewable generation into a more dependable source of power.
The commissioning of the project comes amid increasing interest in solar-plus-storage solutions across Africa, particularly for industrial and mining operations that require stable electricity around the clock. Such projects could become increasingly important as businesses seek to reduce dependence on conventional power sources while maintaining reliable operations.
The Kamoa-Kakula project therefore represents another significant example of how solar power and large-scale battery storage can work together to deliver more dependable renewable electricity, potentially providing a model for similar energy-intensive projects across the continent.
