The Federal Government has announced plans to improve electricity supply across Nigeria through increased deployment and sustainable management of renewable energy infrastructure.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Wednesday at the launch of the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) and a stakeholders’ media engagement session.
Tegbe said renewable energy had become an increasingly important part of Nigeria’s power strategy, noting that the government was pursuing a diversified electricity system capable of meeting the needs of different communities and economic sectors.
He explained that the Federal Government’s approach would combine conventional grid supply with embedded generation, interconnected and isolated mini-grids, distributed renewable energy systems and energy storage technologies.
According to the minister, renewable energy projects can be located closer to consumers, thereby improving electricity access, strengthening public institutions and enhancing the resilience of the country’s broader power system.
Tegbe said the establishment of RAMCO was part of wider government reforms designed to ensure that renewable energy infrastructure is properly managed and maintained after deployment.
He noted that the company would bridge the gap between infrastructure development and long-term sustainability, while also creating opportunities for collaboration between public investment and private capital.
The minister observed that Nigeria had continued to face unreliable electricity supply despite having substantial energy resources and power infrastructure. He said RAMCO would therefore be expected to protect the value of renewable energy assets, improve their operational efficiency and establish clear performance standards.
He added that the company would also enforce credible maintenance and equipment replacement systems to ensure that renewable energy projects remain functional throughout their economic lifespan.
Tegbe stressed that RAMCO’s success should not be judged simply by the number of renewable energy assets under its management, but by their operational performance, improved electricity availability and the level of additional investment attracted to the sector.
The minister further emphasised that the Federal Government’s objective went beyond increasing power generation, describing reliable electricity as essential to Nigeria’s broader economic development.
He said dependable electricity would strengthen manufacturing, support digital infrastructure, improve healthcare services, modernise agriculture and create greater economic opportunities, particularly in rural communities.
Tegbe added that RAMCO would also contribute to efforts to attract both domestic and international investment into Nigeria’s power sector on commercially sustainable terms.
The Federal Government, he said, remains committed to building a more reliable, diversified and sustainable electricity system capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic growth.
