United Kingdom-backed clean energy initiative has helped expand access to renewable energy for about 46 million people across emerging economies, while attracting more than £3 billion in public and private investment and supporting over 256,000 green jobs.
The figures are linked to the Ayrton Fund, a UK Government-backed programme focused on supporting clean energy innovation and expanding access to affordable and reliable energy in developing and emerging economies.
The latest results were announced ahead of the Ayrton-Oxford Academic Symposium at the University of Oxford. The event brings together researchers, technology developers, investors and policymakers to examine ways of turning clean energy research into practical solutions for communities facing energy shortages.
According to the organisers, innovations supported through the Ayrton Fund have not only expanded access to clean energy but have also contributed to the development of new technologies and research. The programme has so far generated 191 technology patent applications and contributed to more than 2,400 research papers.
The organisers said the Oxford meeting would focus on strengthening cooperation among universities, innovators, governments and investors to accelerate progress in clean energy access, climate resilience and sustainable economic development.
Senior International Funds Manager at UK Research and Innovation, Caroline Ward, said stronger partnerships across countries and sectors would be essential to moving clean energy technologies from research laboratories into communities and markets.
She said the symposium would help create more equitable international partnerships, attract additional investment and accelerate the development of clean energy technologies capable of supporting economic growth while addressing climate-related challenges.
The Africa-Oxford Initiative, which is involved in the symposium, also highlighted the growing importance of African researchers in developing solutions to energy poverty and the continent’s transition to cleaner energy.
Director of the initiative, Professor Kevin Marsh, said African researchers should be central to efforts to address global challenges, particularly energy access and the transition to green economies.
He stressed that turning research into real-world impact would require closer cooperation between academic institutions, innovators and investors, pointing to the initiative’s work over the past decade supporting African researchers, academics and innovators.
The impact of the programme is also being seen in Nigeria’s education sector. Professor Misbahu Mohammed of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, said his involvement in the Transforming Energy Access Learning Partnership (TEA-LP) had contributed to changes in the university’s Master of Science Renewable Energy Programme.
The partnership supported the introduction of two practical courses — Local Solutions for Energy Access and Appliances for Off-Grid Communities — designed to help students connect classroom knowledge with real-world energy challenges.
Mohammed said the initiative had helped students gain practical exposure to locally suitable technologies and market-oriented solutions, better preparing them for employment opportunities in Nigeria’s expanding renewable energy sector.
He also argued that African universities should play a more active role in shaping energy education and innovation rather than simply adopting approaches developed elsewhere. According to him, external partnerships and targeted funding can help universities respond more quickly to the specific energy challenges facing their communities.
The first phase of the Ayrton Fund ran from 2021 to 2026 and was delivered through 40 UK-funded programmes involving more than 1,000 partners worldwide. A second phase of the programme is now underway and is expected to continue until 2030.
The initiative comes at a time when countries across Africa, including Nigeria, are increasingly turning to decentralised renewable energy systems to address electricity shortages, particularly in rural and off-grid communities.
With millions of people still lacking reliable access to electricity in emerging economies, the UK-backed programme is positioning clean energy innovation as both an energy solution and a tool for job creation, investment, research development and sustainable economic growth.
