The Niger State Government has announced plans to develop up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar power capacity by 2030, as part of efforts to strengthen renewable energy generation and improve electricity supply across the state.
Governor Umaru Bago disclosed the target when he received a delegation from ALDESA Group, a renewable energy company and subsidiary of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
Bago said the state was determined to establish itself as one of Nigeria’s leading destinations for solar power generation, with renewable energy expected to play a greater role in meeting the state’s growing electricity needs.
As part of the plan, the governor revealed that the state had secured additional funding for the development of a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power project. He said the initiative would significantly increase the state’s renewable energy capacity and support its long-term 1GW target.
According to him, the procurement process for the project is already underway, with bids opened to companies interested in undertaking the development.
Bago specifically encouraged CCECC to submit a formal bid for the project, assuring the company that all proposals would be assessed transparently in accordance with the state’s established procurement procedures.
The governor said the government remained open to partnerships with credible local and international investors capable of contributing technology, expertise and financing to Niger State’s renewable energy development.
Earlier, CCECC Executive Director, Austin Qi, presented an overview of the company’s renewable energy activities in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
Qi said CCECC’s operations are guided by the principles of safety, quality and sustainability, adding that the company was ready to deepen its collaboration with the Niger State Government.
He reaffirmed CCECC’s interest in supporting the state’s clean energy ambitions and contributing to sustainable economic and infrastructure development.
The proposed solar expansion forms part of Niger State’s broader efforts to increase access to reliable electricity, attract renewable energy investment and reduce dependence on conventional sources of power.
